One of the most pressing needs of clients was the ability to receive timely updates on the status of their legal aid application while considering whether they would be able to obtain a lawyer before going to court. Understanding this customer need helped us prioritize a faster and more cost-effective minimum viable product (MVP) solution before creating the complete customer portal over the next few years. One of the most pressing requirements for clients applying for legal aid is the ability to be informed in a timely manner of the status of their application for a grant covering their legal aid.

Portable worked with Legal Aid NSW to study user needs to design and build grant tracking. Legal Aid NSW is seeking a partner to provide an online portal that will serve as a `digital one-stop shop` for clients receiving legal assistance, replacing its current `inadequate` system. We used this information to iterate on the first prototype and create an SMS tracker for legal aid applicants. We have developed a platform for sending SMS notifications triggered by updates entered into the LANSW grant management system. Once a client receives an SMS notification, they can log into grant tracking (using a code they received in a separate SMS) and view a webpage informing them of their grant application status, important messages, and answers to frequently asked questions about the process. We tested and gathered feedback from people who would eventually use this product regularly, and worked with the LANSW team to create accurate and streamlined content. To support their vision, we conducted a discovery phase for a customer portal using human-centered design methodologies to explore the problem from the customer`s perspective. We held 3 co-design workshops with LANSW clients, created a prototype of an interactive online tool and tested it with 8 Legal Aid NSW users to develop designs at an early stage and identify early success. From this user research, we found that grant tracking could be a cost-effective, efficient, and easy-to-use way to address an urgent customer need.
